In the Spring of 2020, COVID-19 began to spread rapidly across the US. Now, we, along with most of the households around the world, began to shelter-in-place, don masks, disinfect…everything. Our busy break-neck schedule, working full-time, shuttling the kids to school, sports and extracurricular activities, came to a full-stop. This gave me a chance to reflect on my family, my life, and myself. I enjoyed having my family home, spending all that time together. This was in direct contrast to the fear of COVID, as we had to adjust to virtual-distance learning for my 2nd and 6th graders and keeping my toddler entertained.

In this new era of virtual-learning, friendships, and communication, we became disconnected from the outside world beyond our household’s protective bubble. Human interaction was electronic via Zoom, video calls, social media, etc. Through these methods of communication, we somewhat had control of how others saw us; we would angle the camera to capture a more flattering view, add filters to our chats, and use controlled lighting in our favor.

As we emerge from this pandemic, we are reacquainting ourselves with face-to-face interaction. We are once again looking at one another; the masks are coming down, we can once again share full face expressions. Facing one another again is a challenge when we’ve been isolated for so long. But more importantly than facing others, some may find it difficult to face themselves. Sometimes, self-confidence can get a major boost through–a new haircut, new clothes, or a newly brightened smile.
